Arsene Wenger has warned his Arsenal side that they must rediscover their defensive stability fast if they are to challenge for trophies this season.

The Gunners were drawn against holders Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League after stumbling to a 6-3 defeat at Manchester City in the Premier League at the weekend.

Wenger’s men, whose side were knocked out by Bayern at the same stage of last season’s competition, had the best defensive record in the league heading into Saturday’s clash.

And although the Frenchman feels that his side have improved the attacking side of their game since last season, he admits that they must tighten up their rearguard.

We have to find our defensive security back which we have lost over the weekend

Arsene Wenger

“We are different and they [Bayern] are different,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website.

“How much different are they? I don’t know but they look to play a bit more adventurously and more going forward, and we do as well I must say.

“We certainly have more offensive potential with [Mesut] Ozil coming in and we have to find our defensive security back which we have lost over the weekend, but it will be a very interesting challenge.”

Wenger continued: “It is the same draw as last year and we have a good challenge.

“We have to be one goal better this time instead of being one goal worse and I believe it’s an interesting challenge because we have an opportunity to show we have learned from it.

“We have all to win and nothing to lose. We can show that we have moved forward since last season.”
