Ashes 2013-14: Wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow insists England can win the fourth Test despite a slender lead
Jonny Bairstow insisted England could still win the fourth Test despite Australia needing an attainable 201 runs to secure a 4-0 lead in the Ashes series.
The tourists ended Australia’s first innings early in the morning session before England suffered a collapse with the bat in Melbourne.
I don’t know why we keep collapsing
Alastair Cook (51) and Kevin Pietersen (49) produced the best scores of the innings as four of English batsmen fell for ducks at the MCG.
And Bairstow, who scored 21 runs, admits England can’t explain their recent flurry of collapses in the current series.
“Of course we can do it. In the first innings we bowled them out for less than the target they are chasing,” Bairstow told BBC Sport.
“We got the ball moving sideways and bowled with great skill. Hopefully we can take that show of skill into tomorrow.”
He added: “I don’t know why we keep collapsing. If we knew that we would have put our fingers on it and moved on.
“In some areas it is quite difficult to rotate the strike and the fields they have set have been clever. They have bowled well to keep the run-scoring down.”
