Manuel Neuer Kept his concentration among his side’s flying start to make a great save from Milner’s volley and made another good stop from Dzeko. None of the goals were his fault. 6/10

Philipp Lahm Restored to right-back from the defensive midfield position he has occupied this season, he slotted back into it naturally. Got forward well and was the man sending the best crosses in for the Germans. 7

Jerome Boateng Looked a little bit lackadaisical as his former side got back into the game and struggled from there on in. Horrible miskick presented Milner with the winner. 4

Dante Terrific cross-field pass to find Mueller for the opening goal but failed to pick up Silva as the diminutive Spaniard nipped in to score. Conceded a soft penalty for a trip on Milner and should have been punished by Negredo for dallying on the ball. 5

David Alaba His pace was a test for Zabaleta throughout and when he delivered good crosses, he would have been frustrated by the lack of black shirts attacking them. 6

Toni Kroos The presence of his partner in crime, Bastian Schweinsteiger, was sorely missed as he failed to keep possession to his usually high standards. 5

Thiago Alcantara A quiet game early on and he subsequently lacked the incision that was needed to get his side back into the game. 5

Mario Gotze Took his goal well albeit with far too much space in a crowded penalty area. Looked a nuisance as he buzzed around the edge of City’s penalty area. Substituted. 7

Thomas Mueller Wonderfully taken goal, trapping the ball on his chest before firing a left-footed shot beyond a static Hart. Otherwise quiet. 6

Franck Ribery Ran the show in the early stages, taking players on for fun, but was the epitome of his team’s gradual decline. 6

Mario Mandzukic His physical presence helped to bring others into play but he never really looked like getting one for himself. 6

Substitutes

Javi Martinez Came on to protect his side’s lead but failed to do so. 4

Xherdan Shaqiri Looked bright and tested Hart with a stinging drive. 7

Manchester City

Joe Hart Was always going to under the microscope but was let down by his defence in the opening 12 minutes. Got down well to hold Dante’s header and spread himself to deny Gotze but made a couple of very unconvincing clearances. 6

Micah Richards Came off after quarter of an hour with a hamstring injury with City already 2-0 down. 5

Martin Demichelis Made two decent blocks to deny goal bound shots from a dallying Mueller but his lack of pace was completely exposed by Bayern’s explosive start. Improved hugely to deny his old club. 7

Joleon Lescott Gave away one corner with a terrible back pass then an uncertain clearance conceded another from which the second goal came. These nerves slowly evaporated. 7

Aleksandar Kolarov The stand-in captain led by example throughout and kept his composure to slot home the equaliser from the penalty spot. 8

Javi Garcia Completely motionless in the box as first Mandzukic and then Gotze were allowed time to turn in his vicinity and shoot to double the lead. Considering this was from a set piece it was particularly criminal. 5

Fernandinho The best midfield performance by any City midfielder across both ties against Bayern. His tackling was good and he did not look scared when in possession, a quality that proved contagious as the game progressed. 8

Jesus Navas Wonderful burst and cross in the build up to City’s first and third goals. Exposed the gaps left by the marauding Alaba to great effect. 7

David Silva Marked his comeback from injury with a well taken goal to get his side back into it and was superb in setting up attacks. Substituted. 8

James Milner (Man of the match) Had a hand in all three goals. Showed composure to Navas’ cross back across goal and claim and the first assist before winning the penalty for the second goal. Capped this all with a superb finish to give his side the lead. 9

Edin Dzeko Manuel Pellegrini went with just the one striker to add an extra body into midfield but this system was reliant of Dzeko staying up front. He was often found the fourth or fifth furthest man forward, giving his side nobody to aim for. Booked for a high foot on Dante. 6

Substitutes

Pablo Zabaleta Made a panicky sliding tackled that let Mueller in for what should have been his second and looked uncomfortable dealing with Ribery for large parts. 6

Alvaro Negredo Missed a great chance to put the game to bed and put City on top of the group. 6
