McBride, Owen & more: Twitter reacts after Fulham sack Martin Jol
Brian McBride and Michael Owen both tweet their thoughts after Fulham sack Martin Jol on Sunday afternoon
Martin Jol has been sacked as Fulham manager and the Cottagers have appointed Rene Meulensteen to take charge of first-team duties.
The west London side had lost their last five Premier League games, including an emphatic 3-0 loss to West Ham United at Upton Park on Saturday.
Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the ex-professionals to Jol’s dismissal.
Ex-Middlesbrough midfielder Gaizka Mendieta (@GaizkaMendieta6) breaks the news to Twitter: “Martin Jol has been sacked & @FulhamFC chairman, Shahid Khan, announced that Rene Meulensteen will run first team duties.”
England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) reckons Jol was well-braced for the chop: “Fulham have sacked Martin Jol. I get the impression from his recent comments that he won’t be heartbroken.”
Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) warns his old coach that managing is different to coaching: “Good luck to Rene Muelensteen who takes over from Martin Jol. He is a top coach but managing is a different kettle of fish.2
Former Uefa journalist Pedro Pinto (@pedropintotv) isn’t overly surprised: “Martin Jol has been sacked as manager of Fulham. Not surprised. Besides bad results, I know players struggled to work with him.”
Ex-Cottagers striker Brian McBride (@BMcBride20) hopes it can trigger a Saints revival: “Seems everyone knew it was time for a new energy at Fulham. http://bit.ly/1c59exX I’m hopeful we an push up the table now.
It prompts his ESPN colleague Warren Barton (@warrenbarton2) to ask if he wants the job: “@BMcBride20: Seems everyone knew it was time for a new energy at Fulham. http://bit.ly/1c59exX .. Are you going for the job?? My friend!
To which McBride (@BMcBride20) replies: “@warrenbarton2 I’d always be more than willing to help Fulham in any way. But your not getting rid of me yet.”
