Chelsea

Mark Schwarzer Not the sort of night you want as a keeper in December, hopefully he was wrapped up warm as he spent most of the game doing nothing. 6/10

Branislav Ivanovic Got forward well as usual but was booked for a needless challenged and missed a good chance to double the lead. 6

David Luiz A night where he was not tested defensively meant that he could display a quality range of passing. 7

John Terry Completely underworked but kept his back-line organised and disciplined. 6

Ashley Cole Worked extremely hard as he looks to reclaim his manager’s faith and he will have started this process after a solid performance. 7

John Obi Mikel Was out of position to allow Steaua their best chance of the match but Iancu let him off the hook. Kept the ball but was usually slow and negative in possession. Allowed Lampard to push further forward. 6

Frank Lampard Looked to enjoy himself as he tried plenty of shots from distance but none of them troubled Tatarusanu. 7

Oscar Put in a decent performance but would have loved to have filled his boots more than he did against a fairly average Steaua midfield. 6

Willian (man of the match) Had an encouraging game as he drifted inside from the right, displaying some nice touches and incisive passes. 7

Eden Hazard Looked a menace throughout, found it hard to make his trademark runs as defenders backed off him but this allowed him to make a series of neat one-twos and was highly effective moving off the ball. 7

Demba Ba Got a shin on Georgievski’s clearance to get his first Champions League goal of the season but skied a great chance for a second. Also had a late goal ruled out for offside. 7

Substitutes

Andre Schurrle Brimming with confidence from two goals against Stoke, he looked dangerous when introduced. 7

Ramires Injected some energy into the performance but was ultimately unable to help put the tie to bed. 7

Kevin De Bruyne N/A

Steaua Bucharest

Ciprian Tatarusanu Good reactions to turn over Ivanoic’s close-range header. Bravely showed he was not scared of trying to claim a ball in a crowd of bodies. 7

Daniel Georgievski Continued his hapless run against the Blues with what would have been a second own goal in two games against Chelsea had it not been for a faint Ba touch. Looked fired up by this and much-improved. 6

Lukas Szukala Was given the slip by Ba which meant Georgievski was under sufficient pressure to slice the ball off Ba and in. 5

Florin Gardos Did himself no disservice as he repelled just about everything Chelsea threw at him as the gulf in possession was not reflected on the scoreboard. 7

Iasmin Latovlevici Displayed an impressive turn of pace when he burst out from the back but these occasions were rare. 6

Alexsandru Chipciu Completely outclassed. Cole must remember to take him out of his back pocket before his kit goes in the wash. 4

Gabriel Iancu Well-timed run allowed him a clear run on the Chelsea goal but his finish was dragged hopelessly wide. 5

Mihai Pintilii Was virtually anonymous in the game before unsurprisingly being replaced. 5

Nicolae Stanciu Worked extremely hard but failed to get a foothold in the midfield battle for possession. Substituted. 5

Paul Parvulescu Provided his side with width but this was rarely exploited as he was forced backwards by the marauding runs of Ivanovic. 5

Pantelis Kapetanos Was fairly isolated for most of the game but held the ball up well when he did receive it. 6

Substitutes

Andrei Prepelita Did nothing to help his side get a foothold in the game. 5

Leandro Tatu Showed some nice touches but nothing came off for him. 5

Frederico Piovaccari Uneventful spell on the pitch. 5
