David Moyes refused to reveal when Robin van Persie is expected to make his return for Manchester United following a groin injury.

The Netherlands striker has missed the Red Devils’ last four fixtures with the complaint and is expected to sit out Saturday’s clash against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

Asked about the fitness of the 30-year-old in his pre-match news conference on Friday, Moyes said: “Like every other club in the Premier League we’ve got some injuries.

“They’re all making progress – some have got a chance, some don’t.”

Moyes was then asked whether Van Persie could feature on Saturday, to which he replied: “You can ask but I might not answer it.”

The Scot, however, did confirm that Shinji Kagawa is a doubt for the game against the Magpies due to illness.

“Shinji had a sickness and he’s been unwell so I’ll need to see how he is tomorrow. He wasn’t too good later on after the game,” said Moyes, whose side are 12 points behind leaders Arsenal.

“It happens at all football clubs, you do get injuries, sickness and suspensions.”
