David Moyes has claimed that Manchester United are among the favourites to win the Champions League this season after topping their group.

Phil Jones’ second-half goal handed the Red Devils a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at Old Trafford, booking their place in the last-16 draw and ensuring they finished above of Bayer Leverkusen in Group A.

And Moyes, whose side had lost back-to-back home Premier League games ahead of Tuesday’s clash, is convinced that his side are genuine challengers for the trophy.

I’m looking forward to taking the fans back to another final, and hope the draw is kind to us

“I think we could be classed as one of the favourites, but we’ll have to improve if we’re to keep progressing in the Champions League,” said Moyes, whose side are ninth in the Premier League table.

“A club like Manchester United has to be trying to win the trophy, that’s our job. We’re in this competition and we’re a very good team.

“You have to get better as the tournament goes on. It’s a tough competition, a hard one but we will take it one game at a time.

“It’s a great tournament – all United supporters love it, they’ve been to finals before and know exactly what it means.

“I’m looking forward to taking those fans back to another final, and hope the draw is kind to us.”
