Liverpool aren’t Premier League title contenders, says John Aldridge
John Aldridge doesn't believe Liverpool are Premier League title contenders - but is confident Reds can finish in top four
John Aldridge believes Liverpool aren’t Premier League title contenders this season.
The Reds leapfrogged Chelsea into second place and two points behind leaders Arsenal after an emphatic 5-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
I know we’re only two points off the top but I don’t believe we are title contenders. We’ve got to be realistic
Aldridge saw similarities between the win at White Hart Lane and Liverpool’s memorable 4-1 win against defending Premier League champions Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2009.
Although the former Liverpool striker doesn’t think the Reds can win the title, Aldridge considers Brendan Rodgers’ men to be genuine top-four contenders.
“To beat Tottenham 5-0 at White Hart Lane without two of our best players sends out a massive statement,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“It was a complete performance from Liverpool and the best we’ve played under Brendan Rodgers.
“What a massive result. The last time we did that to a top side away from home was when we won 4-1 at Old Trafford in March 2009.
“Sunday’s victory proves we are genuine top four contenders.
“I know we’re only two points off the top but I don’t believe we are title contenders. We’ve got to be realistic.
“I’d happily take fourth place now and I think most fans would too. I just don’t think the squad is strong enough to compete for the title.
“We have benefited from the fact we aren’t in Europe as the manager hasn’t had to tinker too much.”
