Liverpool aren’t Premier League title contenders, says Redknapp
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp doesn't believe the Reds are Premier League title contenders this season
Jamie Redknapp believes Liverpool aren’t Premier League title contenders this season.
The Reds suffered a 2-1 loss to rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday which relegated Liverpool to fifth place in the table.
I fancied my old side for a Champions League spot this season but never thought they would be title contenders
Brendan Rodgers’ men were being touted as potential title challengers before back-to-back top-flight losses to the Blues and Manchester City.
And former Reds midfielder Redknapp reckons Liverpool should be aiming to secure a return to Champions League football this season.
“I’d love to ask Brendan Rodgers if he would take fourth place now. I fancied my old side for a Champions League spot this season but never thought they would be title contenders,” Redknapp wrote in his Daily Mail column.
“They’re by no means out of it because this is a crazy season but in the last four seasons they have finished, on average, 27.5 points behind the title winners. To make up that difference in one season is a huge ask.
“They’ve not been close for a number of years so they’re not yet used to that winning consistency, but it will come. They have benefited from not being in Europe this season, but the Champions League needs Liverpool in it.”
