Manuel Pellegrini praised Manchester City’s “character” after the Citizens came from behind to beat title rivals Liverpool at The Etihad.

Brazil international Philippe Coutinho netted the opener at Eastlands before Citizens skipper Vincent Kompany equaliser from a City corner.

It was very important to try to finish the year near the top of the table

Alvaro Negredo scored what proved to be the game’s winner on the stroke of half-time when Simon Mignolet palmed the striker’s effort into his own net.

“The most important thing was we were losing 1-0 and we had the character and trust to go for the win,” Pellegrini told BT Sport.

“In that moment when Liverpool scored their goal, we had at least three clear chances to score but they scored first and it’s difficult for a team to try to continue playing without being exposed to the counter attack that Liverpool do very well.”

On being top of the league by the end of 2013, Pellegrini added: “I think it was very important to try to finish the year near the top of the table.”
