David Moyes admitted Manchester United are playing “catch up” in the title race after a surprise loss to Everton at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils had chances to take the lead against the Scot’s former side at Old Trafford after Wayne Rooney spurned two clear-cut opportunities to break the deadlock.

It wasn’t about me tonight, I was fortunate to manage Everton and I’m fortunate to be managing Manchester United

However, Everton, who failed to win at United during Moyes’ reign, secured three points when Romelu Lukaku’s mishit strike was prodded past David De Gea by Costa Rican Brian Oviedo.

Everton’s winner ended United’s seven-game unbeaten run and left the defending champions a staggering 12 points behind leaders Arsenal, and Moyes conceded that United are in big trouble in the title race.

“I’m very disappointed. We needed a bit of good fortune and we didn’t get it. Everton kept at it and showed us what a good team they are,” Moyes told Sky Sports News.

“We didn’t defend the goal well enough so it was our own doing. We had some chances as well, as did Everton. They have been playing well and that’s why they are up near the top of the league.

“It wasn’t about me tonight, I was fortunate to manage Everton and I’m fortunate to be managing Manchester United. It’s a big catch up for us now.”
