Roberto Martinez was gushing with praise for his Everton side’s “arrogant” performance after they secured victory at Manchester United for the first time in over a decade.

After a goalless first half, Bryan Oviedo struck a late winner four minutes from time at Old Trafford to condemn David Moyes to defeat against his former side.

And Martinez was full of admiration for Everton’s gutsy display as they moved five points ahead of the Red Devils in the table and ended United’s seven-game unbeaten run.

“We had a mental block that we had to overcome, because over the years we haven’t been able to come to places like this and get the three points,” said Martinez.

“I’m delighted just for that reason; being able to play with the arrogance that we had throughout the game.

“I’m really pleased and proud of the players and the performance and just very satisfied at the hard work we put in.”

Martinez also reserved further praise for Oviedo after he netted his second goal in two games since stepping in for the injured Leighton Baines.

“It tells you everything about Bryan as a professional because he’s got one of the hardest jobs in being the understudy to one of the best left-backs in world football,” he said.

“Bryan has been an incredible professional. He’s been biding his time, being ready for the team and his performances couldn’t be a better reflection of what he is as a player and a human being. He deserves everything.”

Manchester United boss Moyes, meanwhile, praised his former side after their battling display.

“I’m very disappointed,” said Moyes. “We didn’t take the chances we had. But overall Everton kept at it and showed how good a team they are.”
