Manchester United

David De Gea Was constantly kept on his toes by Shakhtar’s attacking threat. Never really troubled and had to be content with making a trio of comfortable stops. 6/10

Rafael Da Silva Consistently provided an attacking outlet but his end product was often lacking. 7

Rio Ferdinand Lucky his first-half mistake, which gifted ball to Teixeira, wasn’t punished. 5

Jonny Evans Assured display from the Northern Irishman who continues to illustrate his growing quality. 6

Alexander Buttner Mixed display from the Dutchman as he looked threatening in attacking areas but poor when on defensive duty. Booked. 5

Phil Jones (Man of the match) Played a crucial role at both ends of the pitch as he acted as a shield for the back four before netting the winning goal with an accomplished finish. 8

Ryan Giggs Provided a number of neat passes as the anchorman in the United midfield, including the one that put Young through on goal. Tried desperately to dictate the tempo. Substituted. 6

Ashley Young Wasted a pair of gilt-edged chances to open the scoring, blasting and lobbing efforts wide. Substituted. 6

Shinji Kagawa Neat pass to give Rooney a goal-scoring chance but otherwise ineffective as doubts about his future at the club continue. 5

Adnan Januzaj Showed useful touches but never really tested his defensive counterparts. 5

Wayne Rooney Largely pedestrian in the first half but showed glimpses of his talent, including when he tried an ambitious lob later in the game. 6

Substitutes

Robin van Persie Had very little impact on the game when he came on, with just one solitary half-chance falling his way. 5

Tom Cleverley Gave the hosts an attacking outlet in the centre of midfield – offering something different than Giggs. Booked. 6

Antonio Valencia No chance to influence proceedings when he was introduced late on. N/A

Shakhtar Donetsk

Andriy Pyatov Made smart saves to deny Januzaj and Jones and had no chance of keeping out the latter’s second-half strike. 6

Darjio Srna Comfortable night for the skipper who had more impact in opposition half, underlined when he struck straight at De Gea. Booked. 6

Oleksandr Kucher Solid display from the centre-half who limited the opportunities for United’s forward players. Booked. 5

Yaroslav Rakitskiy Unlucky that his deflected effort didn’t find the net and felt the wrath of a burly challenge from Jones. 6

Vyacheslav Shevchuk Had to be sharp to keep tabs on Januzaj but offered little else. 5

Fred Presented with chances but failed to cause any strife as both efforts didn’t test the keeper. Substituted. 5

Taras Stepanenko Helped with his team’s neat possession play but didn’t offer much else. 5

Douglas Costa Kept the home defence honest throughout with tricky footwork, easily beating Buttner. Wasn’t afraid to try a long-range effort. 7

Alex Teixeira Wasted a pair of chances in the first half with his direct, pacy running causing problems but his impact wavered as the game went on. 6

Taison Provided no attacking threat and miserable night was complete after slipping in the penalty area, attempting to shoot. No surprise when he was taken off. 4

Luiz Adriano Struggled to make any impact as the spearhead of the visiting frontline as he was easily snuffed out. 5

Substitutes

Bernard Produced some nice touches but often lacked the end product. 5

Fernando Apart from providing fresh legs, he didn’t make any impact. 5

Facundo Ferreyra Offered nothing to excite coach Mircea Lucescu as he was thrown on in desperate attempt to get a goal. N/A
