David Moyes has heaped praise on Danny Welbeck after the striker fired Manchester United to victory at Aston Villa on Sunday.

The England international netted twice in a man-of-the-match display at Villa Park as United ran out 3-0 winners and closed the gap to leaders Arsenal to 10 points.

Welbeck, 23, has five goals to his name so far this season, and United boss Moyes insists that he has been delighted by what he has seen of the forward so far.

“He’s a good player and his goals will help him,” said Moyes. “He’s important to me and hopefully he can get a level of performance which keeps getting him goals.

“He’s always been labelled with that: does he score enough goals? But he has got us a few this season, though he had a period of injury, which was disappointing.

“We like Danny a lot. He works well every day, he came up through the academy and he’s one of United’s own. He’s really important to this club.”

Meanwhile, Moyes also hinted that he will ring the changes for United’s League Cup quarter-final clash at Stoke City on Wednesday night.

“We have a squad of players who I believe can all play in any game, so I’ll see who I think is ready,” he continued.

“We have a lot of games coming up and we need to use that squad. I’ll look at this game and see who is best suited. But I think we have fielded a strong side in every game we have played.

“There were a few I expected to play [against Villa] but got injured on Saturday before we travelled down. There is nothing fresh and hopefully I won’t find anything fresh.”
