David Moyes is hopeful that Wayne Rooney will have recovered from a groin strain in time to face Tottenham on New Year’s Day after missing Manchester United’s win at Norwich.

The 28-year-old England international, who has been one of the Red Devils’ standout performers this season, did not travel to Carrow Road due to the problem.

But the United boss, whose side moved up to sixth in the Premier League table thanks to Saturday’s 1-0 win, is confident that Rooney will be available to face Spurs at Old Trafford.

“I am hopeful and I think he will be fit for New Year’s Day. I just need to wait and see,” Moyes told MUTV.

“He has got the same injury that kept him out at Stoke. It is an abductor injury to his groin, it is not serious but ideally we could have given him a couple of weeks or three to recover completely.

“But he has been so influential for the team and we want to get him back playing.”

Rooney has been in stunning form for United this season, scoring nine goals and making nine assists in 16 Premier League games.
