Andres Iniesta has ended speculation linking the midfielder with a move to Manchester United by penning a new three-year Barcelona deal.

The Red Devils were reported to be lining up a sensational January swoop for the Spain international amid rumours suggesting he had fallen out with Camp Nou bosses.

However, the 29-year-old World Cup winner has signed a new contract with the La Liga champions as expected, ensuring that he will remain at Barca until 2018.

“The Barcelona president [Sandro Rosell] has confirmed that Andres Iniesta, who was on contract until 2015, will now be staying at FCB until June 30, 2018,” a Barcelona statement read. “In 479 official appearances, Iniesta has won 21 trophies at the club.”

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell hailed Iniesta’s commitment as a “great Christmas” present for the Catalan side.

“We are very, very happy,” Rosell said. “I think this is a great Christmas gift for all Barcelona fans.”

Iniesta has scored 53 goals in 533 appearances during 13 seasons at Barcelona, winning the La Liga title six times as well as three Champions League crown.
