Ray Wilkins believes that Manchester United are in need of at least “five or six” new players to turn the Red Devils back into title contenders.

David Moyes’ men slipped to a second straight home Premier League defeat on Saturday as they were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The loss left United in ninth place in the table, 13 points behind league leaders Arsenal after the weekend’s fixtures.

Much has been made of Moyes’ failure to strengthen adequately in the summer transfer window, and former Chelsea assistant boss Wilkins feels that the club’s success will hinge on their business in January.

“This is a massive transitional period for Manchester United,” Wilkins told talkSPORT. “Unfortunately, David needs five or six players.

“It’s going to take two or three windows to put right what has gone slightly wrong at Manchester United.

“It is a great club, it always will be a great club, but David needs time and assistance. Disgruntled fans aren’t really going to help.”
