Wayne Rooney believes it was “vital” that Manchester United got back to winning ways at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils edged to a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night after Phil Jones netted a second-half winner to ensure United topped Champions League Group A.

The defending Premier League champions are currently on a miserable run of form domestically, losing back-to-back games against Everton and Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

And Rooney, who has scored 10 goals this season, admits beating the Ukrainian champions was crucial.

“The most important thing was to get back to winning ways and top the group, so we’ve done that,” said Rooney ahead of United’s trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.

“It could have been better at times but it was win at all costs – after the last two games we knew it was vital.

“The campaign has been good this year in Europe so we just have to try and get consistency in all our games, whether it is Europe or the Premier League.”
