Mesut Ozil apologised to Arsenal fans for not acknowledging their support after the 6-3 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday.

The Germany international chose to walk down the tunnel after the heavy loss, despite Per Mertesacker angrily calling on the playmaker to thank the travelling supporters.

“Sorry I didn’t thank the fans at the end of the game!” Ozil wrote on his Facebook page.

“You have been brilliant to me and I know you had travelled a long way and spent your money to support us.

“I was upset with the result and know I should have come to you to say ‘thank you’ and I know it is a big Arsenal tradition win, lose or draw.”

Speaking after the game, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger moved to play down any suggestion of a rift between Mertesacker and Ozil.

Wenger, whose side remain top of the Premier League, said: “The Germans will sort that out between themselves don’t worry.”
