Per Mertesacker admits that Arsenal were made to pay for taking their foot off the pedal as they reached the last 16 of the Champions League despite defeat at Napoli.

After a goalless first half, Gonzalo Higuain put Napoli ahead in the 73rd minute before Mikel Arteta was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Jose Callejon then scored a second for Napoli with the last kick of the game but Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 win at Marseille knocked out the Italian side and saw Arsenal through as Group F runners-up.

And Mertesacker told Sky Sports: “We were always on the back foot, we took a little break today I think but we will be back on Saturday [against Manchester City].

“It’s always the same, you give 10 per cent less mentally because we were thinking we were through.

“I think we were lucky today but we deserved that because we played a good group stage and now we concentrate on the draw next week.”

Arsenal will face either Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid or Barcelona in the last 16.
