Alan Pardew admitted he is looking forward to doing some business in the January transfer window after his Newcastle side were held to a draw by Southampton.

The Magpies took the lead in the first half at St James’ Park when Yoan Gouffran took the ball around keeper Paulo Gazzaniga after an error by Saints defender Jos Hooiveld.

But Southampton equalised in the 65th minute when Jay Rodriguez slotted in after a great one-two with Steven Davis.

Pardew’s side are sixth in the Premier League table and just four points behind fourth-placed Everton.

But the Magpies boss is hoping to strengthen his squad next month.

“We will look to get one or two players that will take this club into a challenging position,” Pardew is quoted as saying by The Chronicle.

“This window we can be selective and constructive. I certainly wouldn’t like to lose one of our big players for sure.

“But it will be the summer when we do most business.

“One of the players we are looking at for the summer we have looked at 15 times. It is about technical ability, character and whether they will fit in.

“We need more English players and more local boys.”
