No contact from Tottenham, says Southampton’s Mauricio Pochettino
Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino says he hasn't spoken to Tottenham about replacing Andre Villas-Boas
Mauricio Pochettino insists that Tottenham Hotspur haven’t contacted him about their vacant managerial position.
The Southampton boss is one of the names being touted as a potential successor to Andre Villas-Boas, who was sacked on Monday following a 5-0 loss to Liverpool at White Hart Lane.
I would like to wish Andre Villas-Boas all the best in the future, these things can happen in football
However Pochettino, who replaced Nigel Adkins in January, insisted he is happy at St Mary’s working under Saints chairman Nicola Cortese.
“As a manager what’s really important is that the sporting aspect is under my control, in terms of signings,” Pochettino said ahead of Southampton’s trip to Spurs on Sunday.
“Without my agreement no signings go through, and those two basic things are very important for any manager.”
Pochettino also expressed his sympathy for Villas-Boas despite refusing to criticise Tottenham’s decision to sack the Portuguese coach.
“I’m always very respectful with decisions that people make at other clubs,” Pochettino added.
“It’s clear that it’s never a good thing when a colleague is sacked.
“I would like to wish Andre Villas-Boas all the best in the future, these things can
happen in football.
“That’s the bitter side of this game that no one wants but can still happen.”
