Danny Welbeck warned Manchester United’s title rivals that they’re gathering momentum after a slender win at Norwich City.

The 23-year-old striker netted a second-half winner to secure three points for the defending champions at Carrow Road.

We are gathering momentum – but we are not getting carried away

United moved to within two points of fourth-placed Liverpool courtesy of their win, and Welbeck is happy with the progress made in recent weeks.

“We have had some difficult games over the Christmas period, especially with going away twice over the last three days. So we are really pleased to come away with six points,”
Welbeck told BBC Sport.

“We are gathering momentum – but we are not getting carried away. We just want to win the next game. I was delighted to come on at half-time and get the winning goal.

“We were without Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, but it is a squad game and it is a long season. Everyone has got a part to play and that’s what happened today.”

Meanwhile Norwich manager Chris Hughton praised his side’s performance despite the loss to United.

“I thought we were magnificent right throughout game. Their winner was a fortuitous goal with the double deflection which ran into the path of Danny Welbeck,” Hughton told BBC Sport.

“Our organisation was excellent and we had some good chances. On the balance of play, defeat is a tough one to take.

“So many aspects of our game today were very good. But goals win games – and their goal was fortunate.”
