Manuel Pellegrini spoke of his delight to have beaten the “best team” in the Premier League after Manchester City’s 2-1 win against Liverpool.

Citizens captain Vincent Kompany and in-form striker Alvaro Negredo cancelled out Philippe Coutinho’s first-half strike at Eithad Stadium on Boxing Day.

City leapfrogged Liverpool, who were top of the table prior to Thursday, into second place courtesy of their narrow win, and Pellegrini praised his side.

“It was very important because Liverpool were the best team of the Premier League,” Pellegrini said.

“They were top of the table before the match so if they won, they would be four points ahead of our team.

“I am very happy with the response because it is not easy when you face such a difficult team, especially on the counter-attack when you are losing 1-0.

“It is very easy to leave space for them. I think we defended very well.”

Pellegrini was particularly pleased to see City keep Liverpool’s 19-goal man Luis Suarez quiet throughout the 2-1 win.

“They did very well, especially against Suarez,” added Pellegrini.

“He is a great striker. He is in his best moment so it was very difficult for our team not to lose one second in the whole match.”
