Jamie Carragher believes Everton’s Ross Barkley can take over Steven Gerrard’s mantle on Merseyside.

The 20-year-old midfielder has been one of Roberto Martinez’s standout performers in the early part of the season, scoring twice in 14 Premier League appearances.

Ross Barkley is a special talent and could be the one to take over Steven Gerrard’s mantle on Merseyside

Barkley is following in the footsteps of current Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, 33, who progressed through the Reds youth ranks before becoming an England star.

And ex-Liverpool defender Carragher reckons Barkley can blossom into the player that Everton fans dreamed Wayne Rooney would become before he joined Manchester United.

“There has been the emergence of Ross Barkley,” Carragher is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

“Martinez hasn’t been shy in making comparisons with Michael Ballack and Paul Gascoigne and he can become the player Evertonians hoped and dreamed Wayne Rooney would become for them.

“Barkley can become the boy wonder who scores winning goals in front of The Kop to settle derbies and inspire Everton to ending their trophy drought. He is a special talent and could be the one to take over Steven Gerrard’s mantle on Merseyside.”
