A delighted Paul Lambert heaped praise on his Aston Villa side after a “fantastic” win at Southampton hoisted them up into 10th place.

Gabriel Agbonlahor had fired Villa ahead after a slick counter-attack, but Jay Rodriguez nodded in a leveller after half-time.

Headers from Villa’s Libor Kozak and Southampton’s Dani Osvaldo cancelled each other out before Fabian Delph hit a stunning late winner to secure the win for the visitors and end the Saints’ unbeaten home record.

“We were outstanding,” said Lambert.

“The first goal from Gabriel Agbonlahor was world class, but the Fabian Delph strike was even better. It’s not just about Christian Benteke, he is just a young lad.”

Mauricio Pochettino, meanwhile, was left to rue some poor defending as his Southampton side slumped to their third straight Premier League loss.

“We were made to pay for some bad defending. They created four chances and scored three goals, whereas we created 21 chances and scored twice. We were unlucky, but we also made mistakes.”
