Tottenham Hotspur have not asked Basel for permission to speak to their manager Murat Yakin, according to the Swiss club.

The former Switzerland international has emerged as one of the early favourites to replace sacked Portuguese coach Andre Villas-Boas at White Hart Lane.

The 36-year-old left the north London side on Monday following an emphatic 5-0 loss to top-four rivals Liverpool last weekend.

However Basel president Bernhard Heusler insisted Spurs have not made contact with the Swiss champions.

“There has been no contact between the clubs,” Heusler told Blick.

Meanwhile, interim head coach Tim Sherwood is optimistic that he can have a positive impact on the Spurs squad ahead of Tottenham’s trip to West Ham United in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

“When you lose your manager, it’s a change and you’ve got to listen to a different voice, but I’m hoping to get a few messages across in a short space of time so we can get a positive result against West Ham,” Sherwood told Spurs TV.

“It’s a huge game, especially on the back of what they did to us at the Lane. It was disappointing.

“We have to get out there on the front foot and we have to impose ourselves on them as soon as we can during the game.”
