Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal are ready to embrace the pressure of being Premier League title contenders this season.

The Gunners can reclaim top spot on Monday night if Wenger’s men beat Aston Villa, who were memorable 3-1 winners at The Emirates on the opening day of the season.

We do not want to hide anyway, we want to fight for the title

Arsenal, who are currently in third place, have seen their title chances persistently written off despite occupying first place for the majority of the 2013/14 campaign so far.

And Wenger is adamant that Arsenal won’t hide under the radar in the title race and are happy to embrace their role as serious contenders to win the top-flight crown.

“It is harder to do because we have shown consistency,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website.

“But we do not want to hide anyway, we want to fight for the title. Therefore we have to convince sceptical people but you do that only through the consistency of your performance and that is what we want to focus on.”

Wenger also reflected on the significance of Arsenal’s 3-1 loss to Paul Lambert’s men in August, as well as relishing “big challenges” on the horizon.

“I looked at that game again this morning,” Wenger added.

“I looked at the numbers and it was, of course, a big shock at the time.

“But, on the other hand, it was a good test for our mental solidity inside the club because nobody panicked.

“We gave a very swift and quick response when we went to Fenerbahce three days later and we have made a big way since then.

“And now we want to look in front of us and focus on what is coming. Waiting for us are big challenges.”
