Australia v England: Steven Finn to miss remainder of tour
Australia v England: Fast bowler Steve Finn is set to miss the remainder of his country's tour Down Under
Steven Finn is set to miss the remainder of England’s tour of Australia in order to continue to work on the “technical aspects of his bowling”.
The 24-year-old did not feature in England’s humiliating 5-0 Ashes series defeat earlier this month despite their attack’s well-documented struggles against the hosts.
We feel now it is best to take him out of it
Finn was also omitted from the one-day side which suffered an opening six-wicket loss to the Aussies last week, whilst he didn’t feature in England’s rare 172-run win against Australia Prime Minister’s XI on Tuesday.
And England ODI and T20 head coach Ashley Giles confirmed the “talented” 6ft 7ins bowler had been sent home “for his own good”.
Giles said: “Steven is one of our most talented bowling assets who has played and will continue to play an important role for England.
“He has been working hard over the last couple of months on technical aspects of his bowling and Steven and the coaches all feel continuing this work out of the performance environment will be beneficial for him.”
“In the short term, he needs a couple of weeks away. Steven is not selectable at the moment,” Giles added in an interview with BBC Sport.
“Mentally, there’s no problem but it does wear you down. Sometimes through your career you go through those ups and downs.
“His timing is out. That then can affect your confidence and certainly it is not coming out as quickly as he would like.
“I suppose he has been in this state for at least a couple of months and it hasn’t worked. We feel now it is best to take him out of it. Sometimes you do have to do that.”
