Oscar inspired Chelsea to an impressive 3-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s as the Blues kept up the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Earlier, Manchester City had edged to a 3-2 win against Swansea City, whilst Liverpool got back to winning ways thanks to goals from Daniel Agger and Luis Suarez.

After a busy day of Premier League action, here is a selection of our favourite tweets from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order.

City captain Vincent Kompany ‏(@VincentKompany) is thrilled with his side’s start to the new year: “Great way to start the year! This one is to those who made the trip to Wales and defied the weather conditions! Swansea 2-3 City!! #mcfc”

Citizens right-back Pablo Zabaleta (‏@pablo_zabaleta) is relishing the trip to Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup now: “A great way to start 2014 with a tough away win at Swansea. Hopefully we can do the same Next game in the FA cup at Blackburn!!!”

Everton midfielder Gerard Deulofeu (‏@gerardeulofeu) celebrates Leighton Baines’ equaliser: “Yeeess!!! Leighton Baines 1-1! Come on Toffees..”

Toffees centre-half Sylvain Distin (‏@sylvaind15tin) is frustrated that he is injured: “Maybe not the our best game but showed some good team spirit again. Soooo frustrating to watch from the stand …”

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet (‏@SMignolet) is happy with his first clean sheet of 2014: “Happy and healthy 2014 everyone! My best wishes for the new year! And what better way to start it with #3points and a #cleansheet.”

Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar (@RonVlaar4) loves being back in the thick of the action: “Massive win and a great start of #2014. Too bad I couldn’t hold for 90min. Felt great to play again. #UTV #AVFC #AVFCLIVE”

Norwich midfielder Robert Snodgrass ‏(@robsnodgrass7) hails a valiant Norwich City performance: “Point with 10 men is a good result those conditions affected the flow of both teams. Class from our fans travelling in those conditions.”

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien ‏(@MichaelEssien) credits the Blues supporters who made the trip south: “Well done boys, great game and three points. Thanks to the Chelsea fans for supporting the team and chanting my name when I came on #cfc!”

Hull midfielder Tom Huddlestone (‏@Huddz8) felt Suarez’s free-kick strike deflated the visitors at Anfield: “Tough place to go, we put good effort in but needed more quality with the ball. The second goal killed us but was unstoppable.”

West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster (‏@BenFoster) hails three points: “Important to get back to winning ways today, spirit and togetherness seriously evident! Keith and Dean doing a great job. Happy new year all!”

Finally, Reds midfielder Lucas Leiva ‏(@LucasLeiva87) tweets his thoughts: “Great way to start the New Year. Now get some rest and be ready for the cup. YNWA!”
