Rene Meulensteen praised Fulham after the Cottagers bounced back from their horror show against Sunderland to beat Norwich in their FA Cup third-round replay.

The west London side suffered a 4-1 loss to relegation rivals Sunderland at Craven Cottage on Saturday, but the Cottagers showed no signs of a hangover.

Darren Bent scored a 16th-minute opener before Iran midfielder Ashkan Dejagah doubled Fulham’s lead shortly before half-time to put Meulensteen’s men in a commanding position.

And Steve Sidwell scored his sixth goal of the season to set up a fourth-round clash against Sheffield United at Brammal Lane.

“Our desire has never been in question but that desire and urgency has mainly been in going forward and it’s cost us at times, particularly defending set-plays and counter-attacks,” Meulensteen told BBC Sport.

“Today we made sure we were in good shape, working hard to get back into that shape and making it difficult.

Norwich boss Chris Hughton played down the increasing pressure surrounding his job, with the Canaries winless in eight games in all competitions.

“It’s a tough period, but I wouldn’t say it’s my toughest period,” Hughton added.

“We’re three points away from 10th place and there are teams that have deemed to have had good seasons that are perhaps one or two points ahead of us in the division.

“So sometimes we have to look at what the reality is, but at the moment we’re hurting because we haven’t done well enough to win today.”
