Liverpool leapfrogged Everton into fourth place as the Reds edged to a dramatic 5-3 victory over Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday.

Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam cancelled out Ryan Shawcross’ own goal and Luis Suarez’s 32nd-minute effort, before Steven Gerrard, the South American and Daniel Sturridge all netted second-half goals to seal the win, despite Jonathan Walters’ late strike.

Inevitably the eight-goal thriller sent Twitter into a frenzy, and here is a selection of our favourite posts from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to Liverpool’s entertaining win.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) reckons Aly Cissokho was cunningly aiming his effort at Ryan Shawcross: “I swear Cissokho toe punted that ball at Shawcross!”

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour (‏@RealRomfordPele) can’t understand how referees aren’t punishing Martin Skrtel for persistent holding at set-pieces: “Skrtel from corners is a joke. Holding players. Man city when kompany scored another example. Penalty on Shawcross?”

Ex-Spice Boy Jason MCATEER ‏(@MCATEER4) is unsurprisingly thrilled as Suarez doubles Liverpool’s lead: “YYYYEEEESSSSSS!!!!!”

Liverpool legend Michael Owen ‏(@themichaelowen) feels the Reds have been a tad fortunate in the opening 38 minutes: “Not what Liverpool practice on the training ground but that won’t bother Brendan Rodgers!”

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) shares the same philosophy as Suarez: “Wonderful example from Suarez of how if you chase everything down and believe the chance will come, every now and then, it will.”

Arsenal supporter and Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter ‏(@IanJamesPoulter) ruefully looks on as Suarez continues to leave fans on the edge of their seats: “Just wonder how many points clear Arsenal would have been if we had of signed Suarez the guy is class. Pure goal scorer.”

Ex-Everton midfielder Peter Reid ‏(@reid6peter) is rooting for Stoke as Crouch halves the deficit: “Go ed Crouchy.”

Whilst Andros Townsend’s father Troy Townsend (‏@Towno10) comes up with some admirable word play: “Wow, you wouldn’t Adam & Crouch it.”

Former Toffees midfielder Lee Carsley ‏(@lecarso) is impressed by Adam’s goal: “Ssstttttttrrrrriiiiiikkkkkkkkeeeeeee……….”

Hull City playmaker David Meyler ‏(@DavidMeyler7) praises the Potters midfielder for a superb goal: “Strike by @Charlie26Adam”

QPR midfielder Joey Barton (‏@Joey7Barton) is loving the thrilling contest at the Britannia Stadium: “What a game this has been. Best league to watch in the world. No contest. #PremierLeague”

Hull defender Curtis Davies (‏@TheCurtisDavies) feels sorry for Jack Butland after the goalkeeper produces a great save to deny Sturridge – only for the Liverpool man to finish at the second attempt: “What a save from @JackButland_One deserved more but Sturridge relentless”

Ex-Reds striker Neil Mellor ‏(@NeilMellor33) is delighted to see Sturridge mark his return with a goal: “3-5 LFC Sturridge!!! that puts an end to a nervy end to this game! Back with a goal and an assist Sturridge!! #3points #top4”

Liverpool No2 Brad Jones (‏@Brad_Jones1) praises his team-mates: “Great win from the boys! Tough place to go the Britannia. Good to have Studge and Johno back fit too.”

Former Reds midfielder Luis Garcia ‏(@LuchoGarcia14) is relieved to see Liverpool make it through a tough game: “Tough game for the reds, Crouchy with a goal for Stoke. Liverpool 5 – Stoke 3.”

Steven Gerrard’s old team-mate David Thompson (@thomo77) reckons the Reds skipper has a few more years left in his veteran legs: “Stevie G can play for Liverpool for another 2/3 years easy in that position #armchair”

Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson (‏@glen_johnson) hails a huge result in the top-four race: “Big win and important three points today.”

Injured Daniel Agger (‏@DanielAgger) celebrates his eight anniversary with Liverpool by watching his team-mates secure maximum points: “Great 3 points today:) and thank you for all the tweets. 8 years is a long time. But it’s been a fantastic journey so far:) Y.N.W.A.”

Finally, Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet (‏@SMignolet) is happy to come away with three points: “Very important to get the 3 points today at a difficult place in tough conditions! #YNWA”
