John Aldridge believes “one quality signing” could make all the difference in Liverpool’s bid to finish in the top four.

The Reds reclaimed fourth spot in the Premier League after a thrilling 5-3 victory over Stoke City at The Britannia on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers snapped up Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturrige for a bargain £20m in January last year – and the pair have blossomed into key Reds players.

And Aldridge wants the Liverpool manager to replicate his previous success in the market this month to cement the Merseyside outfit’s Champions League prospects.

“I was disappointed to read in the ECHO on Saturday the manager saying that strengthening the team may have to wait until the summer if Liverpool can’t get the right deals in January,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“I know it’s difficult to find value at this time of year and to be fair there has been very little business done so far across the Premier League.

“But as fans we’re not kidding ourselves. We all know we need to take advantage of this window to try to ensure we have what’s required to remain in the Champions League spots.

“One quality new player could make all the difference. You only have to look at the impact Sturridge and Coutinho made last January.”
