Mikel Arteta has claimed that there are plenty of English clubs keeping tabs on Xabi Alonso’s contract situation at Real Madrid.

Alonso, whose current contract with the La Liga giants expires at the end of the season, was linked with a sensational return to Liverpool over the summer.

The 32-year-old Spain international is yet to pen a new deal with Madrid despite having been in discussions with the club for some time.

And Arsenal midfielder Arteta believes that there are a number of Premier League clubs keeping an eye on Alonso’s situation.

“I’ve known him since we were both kids,” Arteta told La Cope.

“If he has any doubts about renewing his contract, I’m sure it won’t be just for sporting issues; it will be because he has concerns about being physically up to it.

“He is a very noble guy. I am sure that he has looked at it from every possible angle and he will have his decision clear in his mind.

“But over here [in England], there are a lot of teams interested in him – he could take his pick.”
