Carlo Ancelotti has dented Liverpool’s hopes of re-signing Xabi Alonso by insisting that he expects the midfielder to sign a new Real Madrid contract in the coming weeks.

The Spain international, whose current contract with the La Liga giants expires at the end of the season, was linked with a sensational return to Anfield over the summer.

The 32-year-old is yet to pen a new deal with Madrid despite having been in discussions with the club for some time.

But Real boss Ancelotti fully expects the midfielder, who spent five seasons at Anfield between 2004 and 2009, to stay at the Spanish club.

“I think that we will find a solution and reach an agreement between the club and the player,” said Ancelotti on Thursday.

Asked about the January transfer window, Ancelotti added: “There is nothing new regarding that.

“No players are leaving and we’re not going to sign anyone. The window is closed for us.”

Speaking last summer amid reports linking Alonso with a return to Merseyside, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for the Spaniard.

“There have been probably 100 players linked with Liverpool, and Xabi Alonso has been one of them,” Rodgers said back in July.

“Xabi was someone who was an incredible player for the club, a wonderful role model for Liverpool.

“He’s in a different moment in his career at Real Madrid and has been one of many players linked with the football club.”
