Mesut Özil and Jack Wilshere both tweet their thoughts as Arsenal leave it late to beat Cardiff City 2-0

Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott scored at the death to hand Arsenal a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City and keep them top of the Premier League table.

Substitute Bendtner drilled home from point-blank range in the 89th minute after Bacary Sagna’s effort was parried by goalkeeper David Marshall, before Walcott chipped home a second shortly after.

The win prompted plenty of activity on Twitter, and here are our favourite updates as Arsenal kicked off 2014 with a win.

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) tweets his surprise as Bendtner puts the Gunners ahead: “Huge goal for Arsenal scored by Bendtner. Yes Bendtner!”

Injured Arsenal playmaker Mesut Özil (‏@MesutOzil1088) hails the Gunners’ fighting spirit after the final whistle: “2:0 – gunners never give up. Never!!!”

Gunners legend Ian Wright ‏(@IanWright0) praises the north London side’s resilience: “Good win for AFC, well done boys, great patience. Great finish Theo.”

Birthday boy Jack Wilshere (‏@JackWilshere) wishes Bendtner all the best after he picked up an ankle injury… “Wow! That was close! Thought I wasn’t going to come! Fans were amazing, saw us through today! Well done @bendtnerb52 get well soon! #afc”

Injured Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs (@KieranGibbs) chimes in: “Good way to start the new year….well done to the boys and happy birthday @JackWilshere #Arsenal #AFC”

And finally, forward Lukas Podolski (‏@Podolski10) has the final say, sending his support to Michael Schumacher, who remains in hospital after a skiing accident: “1st place! It was a important victory for our team today. Michael, we all hope that you will win, too.…”
