Friday night football returned this weekend with Aberdeen playing host to Terry Butcher’s Hibernian. A late goal from Willo Flood proved to be the decisive moment of the match as the Dons made it seven wins from their last eight with a 1-0 victory. Motherwell also kept up their fine form with a 1-0 victory over Hearts on Saturday. A 40th-minute goal from John Sutton made it six wins in a row for Stuart McCall’s side and ensured they maintained their one point lead over Aberdeen in the battle for second place.
On Saturday, 11th-placed Ross County travelled to Glasgow to face Partick Thistle who began the day one point ahead of the visitors. The day was dominated by January signings, with Lyle Taylor and Filip Kiss the stars of the show. Thistle took control of the match in the first half, going in at the break 2-1 ahead after a brace from Lyle Taylor. After a Steven Lawless goal put Partick further ahead, goals from Ben Gordon and Kiss rescued a point for the away team. With St Mirren losing 2-0 to St Johnstone in Perth, the result means that the Saints now sit two points ahead of County and only a point ahead of Thistle. Kilmarnock, who had no game this weekend due to Celtic travelling to Turkey, have also found themselves closer to the play-off spot and sit on 21 points, one more than St Mirren.
In the weekend’s Sunday fixture, two of the leagues out of form sides played out a 1-1 draw in the Highlands. The result means that both Dundee United and Inverness have gone five games without a win and have slipped out of the race for second in the Scottish Premiership. Although both sides will be fairly satisfied with a point, John Hughes and Jackie McNamara will be desperate for their sides to pick up three points in their next game.
