Brendan Rodgers urged Liverpool to remain in control of their top-four fate after a thrilling away victory at Stoke City.

Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam drew the Potters level before half-time after Aly Cissokho’s deflected strike and Luis Suarez’s 21st goal of the season had capped a “perfect” opening 38 minutes for the Reds.

We just have to control our own destiny

Steven Gerrard restored his side’s lead from the penalty spot early in the second half before Suarez added his second of the game, but Jonathan Walters netted with five minutes remaining to ensure a frenetic finish.

However Daniel Sturridge, who made his return from an ankle injury, sealed three points with a composed finish after his initial effort was saved, and Rodgers praised Liverpool’s tenacity at the Britannia Stadium.

“It was a brilliant win for us. We spoke briefly afterwards, we made mistakes without
being cut open, we need to tidy that up,” Rodgers told BBC Sport.

“But we were really exciting going forward. I said to the players at half-time it was a perfect away performance for 38 minutes. I told them at half-time to go forward with a positive mind as we have the firepower.

“I felt in the early part of the second half they were getting joy down our left side. Philippe Coutinho, who is an outstanding young player, had to be sacrificed for our team.

“Everyone around us won yesterday. We just have to control our own destiny.”

On Sturridge’s return, Rodgers added: “It was great for Daniel Sturridge [to score on his return]. His movement in such a short space for his goal was great.”
