David Moyes praised Manchester United’s defensive display after they held Arsenal to a goalless draw.

Robin van Persie forced a brilliant save from Wojciech Szczesny late on, while David De Gea denied Santi Cazorla at the other end.

I thought defensively we looked sound and were in control for most of the game

The draw left United 11 points behind fourth-placed Liverpool with 12 Premier League games left to play this season.

But Moyes was encouraged with his side’s “compact” performance despite them falling further behind in the race for a top-four finish.

“It was a tight game, like they have been in the past. We won 1-0 up at Old Trafford. Both teams had one or two opportunities but it ended up 0-0,” Moyes told BT Sport.

“Overall we looked quite compact and defended well throughout the game when we had to do so.

“We had opportunities to score from the first minute but I would have liked us to have played better at times when we went forward.

“But overall I thought defensively we looked sound and were in control for most of the game.”

Moyes, whose side will travel to Dubai for a warm weather training camp this week, continued: “We have to try and win the next game.

“We tried tonight to win it but we got a point; I’d have liked all three.

“If you’d said to me at the start of the season we’d get four points of Arsenal, I’d have said that’s not bad. It’s other games where we’ve let ourselves down.”
