Bayern star Thomas Mueller defends Mesut Ozil’s form at Arsenal
Thomas Mueller reckons Arsenal's club-record signing Mesut Özil is struggling without winter break
Thomas Mueller reckons Mesut Ozil has suffered a loss of form due to the lack of a winter break in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old was rested for Arsenal’s 4-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday after his disappointing performance in the Champions League in midweek.
It’s not easy for Mesut because you have to play so many games
Ozil, who joined Arsenal in a club-record £42.5m deal from Real Madrid last summer, missed a first-half penalty and failed to have any impact in a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich.
And Ozil’s Germany team-mate Mueller issued his support for the under-fire Gunners midfielder.
“It’s not easy for Mesut because you have to play so many games – I don’t know how many games he has played for Arsenal without having a break,” Mueller said.
“In the Bundesliga we have just had a month off. In England it’s very hard to be a professional footballer. You have any more games than we do in Germany.
“But I hope Mesut has good games for Arsenal because he is a friend of mine and I know how good he can be.”
Mueller also believes England pay the price for the lack of a winter break at major tournaments ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
“When England get to World Cups they look a bit tired,” he added.
“The body can recover but the head’s another story.”
