Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Daniel Agger and Glen Johnson won’t face Arsenal on Saturday – but has revealed the pair are nearing a return to first-team action.

England international Johnson hasn’t featured for Liverpool since a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at Anfield last month, with the right-back suffering from niggling injuries.

They’ll not be back for this one, but we’re hopeful that next week [they will be back]

Meanwhile, Reds vice-captain Daniel Agger has been nursing an groin problem which the Danish centre-half picked up in a 2-0 victory over Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup in January.

“No, they’ll not be back for this one, but we’re hopeful that next week [they will be back],” Rodgers told his pre-match media conference ahead of their clash against Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday.

“Glen Johnson is making a great recovery, so there might be a point towards the middle or end of next week [when he can return]. Daniel Agger will hopefully be next week at some stage.”

Liverpool centre-half Mamadou Sakho is another long-term absentee after the France international suffered a hamstring injury in a 2-1 loss Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in December.

And Rodgers admitted that the 24-year-old isn’t close to making a comeback.

“Sakho is still out for a little bit, but apart from that we will be the same as what we have been for the weekend,” added Rodgers.
