An inspired performance from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended Borussia Dortmund’s four-match winless run in the league. The Gabonese attacker scored twice to put Dortmund back on track in the Bundesliga despite a far from convincing performance against Eintracht Braunschweig, who battled bravely. But it was a much-needed 2-1 victory and a big morale boost for all. Better news too was the return of Mats Hummels, who provided more defensive stability to a Dortmund side that has not kept a clean sheet in 10 Bundesliga matches. Their achilles heel of defending set-pieces was highlighted once more by Braunschweig’s equaliser. Still more work to do then for Jürgen Klopp’s side.
Schalke have seemingly turned their inconsistent season around following their win over European rivals Wolfsburg. Ten points out of the last 12 has revived their Champions League aim, all without injured Arsenal target Julian Draxler. That has been partly down to the impressive performances of ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng who scored the winner over Wolfsburg. Jens Keller may not be a favourite, but he has been calling the shots right . . . for now at least. On the subject of Draxler, who didn’t leave the Royal Blues for Arsenal – as predicted last week – the youngster was interviewed by Sky Germany and said he was happy to stay and fight for Schalke this season.
What could have been for Cardiff City as Mame Biram Diouf hit two goals in a 3-1 win for Hannover as Tayfun Korkut’s appointment looks ever more impressive. The new Hannover coach seems to have sparked the Lower Saxony club in to life as they won their second match in a row since his arrival. The Senegalese striker was, according to many, odds-on to join the South Wales club because of the shared agent situation (Jim Solbakken) with new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but under Hannover’s new chief Tayfun Korkut, and a blossoming partnership with Artjem Rudnevs, the 26-year-old might just find a new lease of life in Hannover. Meanwhile, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s second loss in a row has put a dent in their Champions League hopes.
Bayern Munich won all their home Bundesliga matches in 2013 – their first match at the Allianz Arena of 2014 seemed to offer little change this year, comfortably beating Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0. Top names of Franck Ribery, Mario Mandzukic, Arjen Robben all featured as Bayern’s injury list subsides (not that they missed them!) Their dominance in the Bundesliga is now 13 points after their 44th consecutive unbeaten match.
