Cardiff City

David Marshall Wasn’t really tested until Delph’s deflected shot in the 76th minute. Produced a point-saving stop to deny Weimann in the dying moments of the game. 7/10

Kevin Theophile-Catherine A thumping challenge which echoed around the Cardiff City Stadium was his most notable contribution of the first half. Theophile-Catherine recovered superbly to deny hesitant Agbonlahor with the goal at the striker’s mercy midway through the second half. 7

Steven Caulker The former Tottenham defender was tasked with keeping Benteke quiet. Complemented his centre-half partner Turner. 7

Ben Turner (Man of the match) His positioning was flawless to nip ahead of Benteke and clear the danger with seconds remaining in the first half. Doesn’t possess the pace of Agbonlahor or Benteke, but Turner’s reading of the game saved Cardiff time-and-time again. 8

Declan John Struggled to contain Albrighton as the Villa winger proved a constant threat. 5

Craig Noone As always, Noone showed plenty of guile down the wing. However, the 26-year-old’s end product was hit-and-miss. Did hit the crossbar with a deflected shot in the first half. 7

Gary Medel Harried and hustled the Villa midfielders to good effect. Looked uncomfortable when facing a Villa counter-attack coming up against pace and power. 6

Jordon Mutch His night was cut short due to a first-half injury. 5

Wilfried Zaha A real livewire. The winger, on loan from Manchester United, showed adventure with the ball at his feet. Perfectly-weighted ball to release Campbell. Had the ball in the net but ruled offside. Faded in the second half and replaced. 7

Fraizer Campbell A cunning run to collect Zaha’s through ball before being denied by a combination of Guzan and the woodwork. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have no complaints about the former United striker’s movement and work-rate. 7

Kenwyne Jones Having scored in his last home game, the Cardiff striker didn’t come close to rustling Guzan’s net. Wasted the home side’s best chance of the second half as his diving header was straight at Guzan. Epitomised his night. 6

Substitutes

Magnus Wolff Eikrem Brought on for Mutch in the 32nd minute. Made a couple of blocks. Didn’t look out of place. 5

Mats Daehli Replaced Zaha but didn’t have any impact. 4

Aston Villa

Brad Guzan Brilliant reflex save to push Campbell’s first-half effort onto the woodwork. Looked uncomfortable under a couple of high balls. 6

Leandro Bacuna A threat running past Albrighton and whipping in crosses for Agbonlahor and Benteke. 6

Ron Vlaar Rescued his centre-half partner after Baker’s wayward clearance landed Guzan in trouble. Whenever Villa found themselves in danger of conceding, Vlaar would appear with a last-ditch header or tackle. Rivalled Turner for the man-of-the-match award. 8

Nathan Baker A real presence at set-pieces whether it was defending or attacking required. Had some naïve moments but was rescued by his captain Vlaar. 7

Ryan Bertrand Good position and header to clear Noone’s cross with Campbell ready to pounce. The left-back, on loan from Chelsea, produced a solid performance. 6

Marc Albrighton The young winger was bright down the right wing, sending in a brace of teasing crosses in the early stages of the clash. His pace remained a threat throughout the match, although his final ball could have been better. 7

Ashley Westwood Quiet performance from the Villa midfielder. The holding midfielder has one pot-shot but the effort sailed harmlessly over Westwood’s crossbar. 6

Fabian Delph Fresh from a brace of long-range belters in recent weeks, the former Leeds United midfielder sent Marshall scrambling with a low shot. Delph came close with 14 minutes remaining, too, as his deflected effort was palmed wide by Marshall. 8

Joe Bennett Villa’s best chance of the first-half fell to the 18-year-old youngster. Had time to pick out a man but his cross was too far ahead of Agbonlahor. Replaced with 20 minutes remaining. 6

Christian Benteke The Belgian looked sluggish with a series of heavy touches or over-hit passes. Left frustrated by Turner’s excellent positioning and well-timed tackles. 6

Gabriel Agbonlahor Couldn’t manufacture the space to really test Cardiff goalkeeper Marshall. Despite his superior pace, the Villa forward failed to get the upper-hand on Turner. Took an absolute age when the ball broke to him in the Cardiff area with Marshall to beat, allowing Theophile-Catherine managed to make a block. 6

Substitutes

Andreas Weimann Handed 20 minutes to make an impact and he almost had a telling one, but denied by a superb Marshall save right at the death. 6
