Cesc Fabregas has hit back at Jose Mourinho after the Chelsea manager claimed that Manchester City would be facing “the worst Barcelona of many, many years” in the Champions League this week.

The former Real Madrid boss said that the Citizens would have a good chance against the La Liga champions because Barca are weaker than they have been for years.

However, goals from Lionel Messi and Dani Alves secured a 2-0 win for Barcelona at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday as the Spanish giants took a big step towards the quarter-finals.

And Fabregas was quick to aim a thinly-veiled dig at Mourinho following his side’s victory in Manchester.

“Some people were talking a bit too much before the game and now they have to shut up for a few days,” Fabregas told ITV.

“We had a great result tonight. The fans put so much pressure on and that’s what makes this so win special. We had a point to prove, and we did it very well.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino insisted that his side were fully deserving of the victory.

“Our aim was to win,” said Martino. “At no point did we ever think about a result that wasn’t winning. The result was a fair one.

“An end-to-end game wouldn’t have suited us [but] we knew there would be moments when we would be under pressure.

“We play a little differently with three forwards, so the decision to deploy another midfielder was made with the intention of us having more and better possession.”
