Jose Mourinho wants Chelsea to pull clear of their top-four rivals before thinking about a potential title challenge after his side moved top of the table thanks to victory over Newcastle.

Eden Hazard scored a hat-trick against the Magpies as the Belgian continued his fine form from Monday’s 1-0 win at Manchester City.

The 23-year-old drove in the opener from Branislav Ivanovic’s pass in the 27th minute at Stamford Bridge, before finishing off a sweeping move in the 34th minute.

And the Chelsea playmaker netted his third from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute after Samuel Eto’o was fouled by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in the box.

I know today we are top of the league but I look to fifth place

The win took Chelsea a point ahead of second-placed Arsenal after the Gunners’ 5-1 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday and Manchester City’s goalless draw at Norwich.

But Mourinho wants his side to cement Champions League qualification before thinking about a possible title challenge.

“I know today we are top of the league but I look to fifth place,” said Mourinho. “I look to Tottenham v Everton and Manchester United v Fulham tomorrow and I want to be far from fifth.

“When we are far from fifth and have a Champions League position under control, then it will be time to look at Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool and see where they are and see the distances.

“From that point, we can start thinking about other things.”
