Raheem Sterling produced a match-winning display as Liverpool were memorable 5-1 winners against Premier League leaders Arsenal at Anfield.

Arsenal are now 7/1 to win the Premier League this season with Paddy Power

Reds centre-half Martin Skrtel scored twice from two set-pieces before Sterling and Daniel Sturridge fired the home side into a 4-0 lead within 20 minutes. The 19-year-old winger added his second and Liverpool’s fifth before Mikel Arteta scored a consolation penalty.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool’s mesmerising performance prompted a huge response on Twitter, and here is a selection of our favourite reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to a remarkable clash.

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Özil (‏@MesutOzil1088) is relishing his first game at Liverpool’s famous ground – that joy was short-lived: “My first game at Anfield Road. Looking forward. Go #gunners!”

Norwich midfielder Elliott Bennett ‏(@Ebenno88) feels Liverpool’s attack is no longer SAS but SASAS after Sterling’s brace: “Liverpool’s SASAS is frightening. Complete blend in a front.”

Former Southampton defender Danny Higginbotham ‏(@Higginbotham05) reckons Liverpool are at their very best: “Incredible game. Shown Liverpool at there best. When they get the first goal they then pick the opposition off on the counter with pace.”

Cult hero Luis Garcia ‏(@LuchoGarcia14) knows all about blistering starts at Anfield: “What a first half by Liverpool. 4-0 Arsenal. What a first 20 mins. #YNWA”

Injured Reds right-back Glen Johnson (‏@glen_johnson) claims it is the best 20 minutes that he has seen – ever: “First 20 mins was the best football I have seen!!!! #CouldOfBeen6”

Former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright ‏(@Mark__Bright) tweets what a lot of punters are thinking: “Apparently Skrtel was 200/1 to score a brace and 2400/1 for a hat-trick….Surely only a member of his family would be so brave! #lfc”

Ex-Reading striker Jason Roberts ‏(@JasonRoberts30) can’t see Liverpool losing from 4-0 up… surely: “4-0 up against Arsenal…what can go wrong!!!! Ahem!!!”

Five star! Sky Sports News presenter Hayley McQueen ‏(@HayleyMcQueen) can’t quite believe the Arsenal demolition: “5, that’s FIVE nil, what’s happening. #lfc v #afc”

Double Olympic champion Mo Farah (‏@Mo_Farah) would prove an asset for Arsene Wenger with his side looking legless: “Bad day in the office AFC……!!!”

Even God ‏(@TheTweetOfGod) is jumping ship: “Yes, I have forsaken Arsenal.”

Liverpool fan John Bishop ‏(@JohnBishop100) is supremely confident that Liverpool can’t lose from here: “@GaryLineker If Arsenal win this game I will remain totally naked for the rest of my life – even when it snows!”

Arsenal legend Lee Dixon ‏(@LeeDixon2) rues talking up his former side’s defence in the media this week: “That’s the last time I do a piece in the Evening Standard on our defence I can tell you that for sure #eggonface”

Tennis star and Liverpool fan Caroline Wozniacki ‏(@CaroWozniacki) made a good decision: “I knew it was worth moving my practice to watch this game today! Very very impressive! #liverpool #ynwa”

The partner of Liverpool owner, John W Henry, Linda Pizzuti ‏(@Linda_Pizzuti) gives her thoughts on the match: “LFC stayed ahead of Arsenal from the 1st minute in a thrilling 5-1 victory. A brace for Skrtel & a brace for Sterling!”

Ex-Reds midfielder Dietmar Hamann ‏(@DietmarHamann) feels Liverpool are the overwhelming favourites to finish fourth now: “Excellent game from LFC. Electric home form, great to see how they blow teams away. Long way to go but 4th spot ours to lose now.”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) heaps praise on the Liverpool manager: “Brendan Rodgers is doing one hell of a job with LFC. Not only in terms of results but in developing a style of play so pleasing on the eye.”

Ryder Cup hero and Arsenal fan Ian Poulter ‏(@IanJamesPoulter) isn’t as kind to Arsene Wenger: “I like Wenger as manager but I feel the owners who spend the money should enforce the strengthening of the team & stop this stubbornness.”

Piers Morgan (‏@piersmorgan) won’t have too many sympathisers: “KP dumped, Arsenal stuffed – and ludicrously vilified by America’s transgender community. Been a really fun week.”

Former Liverpool boss Roy Evans (‏@Roy_Evo) reckons it’s one of the best performances from the Reds in a long time: “That was one of the best all round performances I’ve seen for a long time. Well done to Brendan and the lads.”

Liverpool No2 Brad Jones ‏(@Brad_Jones1) hails his team-mates: “What a TEAM performance!!! Incredible.”

More from Morgan: “My revised Premier League prediction: 1) City 2) Chelsea 3) Liverpool 4) Arsenal 5) Everton 6) United (if they’re lucky).”

Credit to Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud (‏@_OlivierGiroud_ ) who gives a brutally honest reflection on the heavy loss: “Was a really poor performance today from me! […] We have to face our responsibilities and bounce back V united! So disappointed but keep the head up!”

Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg (‏@freddie) is understandably unhappy: “Oh my god. Not a great day to be an Arsenal man.”

Liverpool full-back Jon Flanagan (‏@jon_flan93) is ecstatic: “5-1. Get in!”

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet ‏(@SMignolet) thanks the Reds supporters: “Great stuff from the whole team today! Also the atmosphere in the stadium was incredible! Roll on Wednesday.. #YNWA”

Finally, Reds youngster Jordon Ibe ‏(@IbeJordon) dedicates the win to his uncle: “Great result for team today, and so happy to have got on today. Uncle Derek you’re in my thoughts..”
