Luis Suarez: Steven Gerrard spoke to me for hours about Liverpool stay
Luis Suárez reveals how a lengthy conversation with Steven Gerrard helped to convince him to stay at Liverpool
Luis Suarez has revealed how a heart-to-heart talk with Steven Gerrard helped convince him to stay at Liverpool last summer.
The Uruguay international’s future was a source of speculation during the summer window, with Arsenal having had a bid turned down for the striker after he publicly stated his desire to quit Merseyside for a club in the Champions League.
However, Liverpool remained firm in their stance that Suarez was not for sale and the 27-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this term, scoring 23 goals to help the Reds up to fourth place in the table.
He said I was the best forward he’d ever played with
And Suarez has lifted the lid on how Reds skipper Gerrard played an influential role in convincing him to commit his future to the Anfield outfit.
“He didn’t talk about me, or through me, in the press, but in person,” Suarez said.
“In those moments I forgot that he was ‘world football great Gerrard’, a Liverpool legend, but as a humble person who spoke to me with all his heart for hours.
“He said I was the best forward he’d ever played with, which given the amazing strikers that he’s played with at Liverpool, was amazing for me to hear. I’ll never forget that.”
