Lukas Podolski blasts ‘unfair’ criticism of Mesut Ozil after Bayern loss
Lukas Podolski defends Mesut Özil by insisting that the criticism of his Arsenal team-mate is "unfair"
Lukas Podolski has defended Mesut Ozil by insisting that the recent criticism of his Arsenal team-mate is “unfair”.
Ozil was singled out following the Gunners’ 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday after the Germany international missed an early penalty at Emirates Stadium.
He’s an outstanding player who will make all of us happy in [the] future
However, Podolski took to his official Facebook page to stick up for his Germany and Arsenal team-mate on Thursday.
“Everybody is disappointed because of yesterday’s result,” wrote Podolski.
“However, that’s football. It’s not fair to diss [criticise] Mesut. Picking one player out doesn’t help the collective [nor] the whole club!
“He’s an outstanding player who will make all of us happy in [the] future. A missed penalty won’t change that. This happens to me and to every footballer. Friends stand together. So let’s go!”
Podolski’s post came after Ozil himself posted an apology on his Facebook page following the defeat.
Ozil wrote: “The next morning doesn’t feel better either. sorry guys – it wasn’t planned that way. outnumbered it was really hard to win against this team. #ucl #AFCvBAY M1Ö.”
