Man City 0 Barcelona 2: Vincent Kompany voices his frustration at his side's inability to break down the visitors
Vincent Kompany voiced his frustration at Manchester City’s inability to find a way past Barcelona after the Catalan side took a big step towards the Champions League quarter-finals with victory at Etihad Stadium.
After a goalless first half, Lionel Messi gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot after the Argentine was brought down by Martin Demichelis nine minutes after the restart.
The 10 men of City battled hard and David Silva forced a good save from Victor Valdes, but Barca doubled their lead in stoppage time when Dani Alves drilled his shot through Joe Hart’s legs.
They are not the best team we’ve played this season, but they’re incredibly efficient
“We showed them too much respect in the beginning. They were there for the taking,” Kompany told ITV.
“They are not the best team we’ve played this season, but they’re incredibly efficient.
“When you play against them you do realise that the individual quality of their team is phenomenal. It makes it so difficult to close them down.
“There were so many soft fouls today. In the Premier League there would never have been any of those fouls given.
“I thought that if the tempo would have been in this game it would have been to our advantage. Whenever we went forward we looked dangerous.”
City travel to Camp Nou for the return leg of the last-16 clash on 12 March.
