‘Man United can’t afford to miss out on Champions League’

Christian Purslow has warned Manchester United that they are likely to struggle to break back into the top four if they miss out on Champions League qualification this season.

The Red Devils’ hopes of securing a top-four finish this term hang in the balance, with David Moyes’ men currently seventh in the table and 11 points behind fourth-placed Liverpool with 12 games left to play.

The difference between fourth and fifth place in the Premier League may be between £50-60m a year

And although Purslow believes that United would be able to cope without the revenue the Champions League brings in for one year, the former Liverpool managing director feels that two seasons out of Europe’s elite club competition would be a crushing blow.

“If you qualify for the Champions League you stand to make around £30m,” Purslow told talkSPORT.

“Next year, when that BT Sport deal kicks in, that figure will probably double. In other words the difference between fourth and fifth place in the Premier League may be between £50-60m a year.

“That affects Manchester United the most. They don’t look like they’re going to be there this year. It gives Moyes and [chief executive] Edward Woodward a year to get their act together.

“They can live with a £30m disadvantage for one year but, in another year’s time, if they miss out [again], they may never get back [in the Champions League].”
